Sat 23 Oct : Portadown 2 Lower Maze 1 ( Mark Boylan )

Lower Maze lost out narrowly to Portadown when they went down 2-1 at Moira on Saturday.

From the first whistle the game was eagerly contested with defences on top and few chances. While Portadown looked the more dangerous team, the Maze back four of Conor Stinton, Tiernan O’Meallaigh, Alexander Toombs and Kyle Thompson limited the visitors to a few half chances. Midway through the half Portadown took the lead and five minutes into the second half Maze found themselves two down.

It was only then that Maze began to exert some pressure and create chances with Ryan Williamson going close and Mark Boylan hitting the bar. Five minutes from time Maze deservedly got a goal back with Mark Boylan heading home a Tariq Berry cross. Despite further pressure in the closing minutes Portadown held out and to leave Maze disappointed again.

Sat 16 Oct : Lower Maze 3 Newhill 3 (Ryan Williamson 2, Mark Boylan )

Lower Maze gained a well deserved point against Newhill on Saturday at The Rec but had the chances to take all three points.

After an even start to the game, Maze found themselves a goal down after 10 minutes but levelled 2 minutes later when Dan Smyth headed on to Ryan Williamson who held off two defenders and finished well. In a keenly contested half Alexander Toombs and Kyle Thompson defended solidly at the heart of the Maze defence limiting Newhill’s scoring opportunities. After forcing a great save from Kaynor Beckett, Newhill however took the lead for the second time ten minutes before the break but again Maze fought back and equalised when Ryan Williamson scored his second after combining well again with Dan Smyth.

Maze had the better of the early exchanges in the second half and went in front after 5 minutes when Mark Boylan scored from the edge of the box. However after a defensive mix up Newhill levelled the score at 3-3 shortly after.

With Jon and Connor Keating battling well in midfield and Scott McMullan driving forward, Maze created further opportunities with Callum Portis and Ryan Williamson, looking for a hat trick, going close. At the other end Newhill too looked dangerous and only great covering tackles by both Conor Stinton and Tiernan O’Meallaigh prevented the visitors scoring.

A well contested and sporting game the match ended with the score 3-3 and the points shared

 Sat 9 Oct : Lower Maze 2 Greeisland 3 ( Dan Smyth , Callum Portis )

Lower Maze were pipped by Greenisland on Saturday when they went down 3-2 to a last minute penalty.

Maze began the game brightly and almost took the lead in the fifth minute when Ryan Williamson’s effort hit the post with the keeper well beaten. The breakthrough however came 5 minutes later when Dan Smyth smashed the ball home after good work by Tiernan O’Meallaigh and Ryan Williamson. Maze went further in front when Callum Portis finished well after being found with a great through ball by Scott McMullan.

The second goal stirred Greenisland into action but a combination of solid defending and good goal keeping by Kaynor Beckett saw Maze finish the half with a 2-0 lead.

The start of the second half saw Maze create more chances but Greenisland narrow the gap with a good headed goal from a corner. Maze almost struck back immediately but Connor Keating’s header thundered against the bar and the ball was scrambled clear. Greenisland began to exert more pressure and 5 minutes later they made it 2-2.

The last 10 minutes saw Maze regain control and push for a winner but after Dan Smyth, Mark Boylan and Callum Portis went close Greenisland snatched the winner with a last minute penalty.

Sat 25 Sept : Loughgall 3 Lower Maze 1 ( Mark Bowlan )

Sat 18 Sept : Loughside 5 Lower Maze 2 ( Dan Smyth, Ryan Williamson )

Sat 11 Sept : Lower Maze FC 3 Lisburn Wanderers 1 ( Dan Smyth 2, Callum Portis )

Lower Maze picked up their first points of the season when they got the better of Wanderers in Saturday’s match at the Bog Road..

For the second week in a row, Maze conceded a very early goal with Wanderers scoring in the second minute despite the efforts of Kaynor Beckett in the Maze goal. Maze slowly began to exert pressure on the Wanderers defence and after some near misses got the equaliser in the tenth minute after a great move down the right. Mark Boylan won the ball in midfield and fed Callum Portis whose pinpoint cross was headed home by Dan Smyth.

5 minutes later Maze took the lead with Smyth scoring his second after good work by Tiernan O’Meallaigh. The rest of the half saw Maze continue to dominate but Wanderers defending well and always dangerous on the break.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Maze creating chances but initially unable to add to the score line. After hitting the woodwork several times, Maze scored their third when Ryan Williamson, always dangerous on the left, crossed and Callum Portis slotted the ball home. Although Wanderers continued to look dangerous on the break, Scott McMullan and Alexander Toombs at the heart of the Maze defence limited their scoring opportunities to a few half chances and the match ended with Maze 3-1 victors.

Sat 3 Sept : Lower Maze FC 5 Lisburn Distillery 8 ( Dan Smyth 2, Callum Portis, Ryan Williamsom, Mark Boylan )

Maze’s Bog Road pitch was in excellent condition for the opening match of the season which featured a game that no one could have predicated, with 13 goals scored and the coaches, at the end, left scratching their heads.

A taste of what was in store came as early as the first minute when first Mark Boylan’s long range effort hit the underside of the Lisburn bar and bounced clear off the line and then immediately the visitors broke to the other end to score with their first attack. It got worse for the home team as they found themselves 3-0 down after only 5 minutes to a fired up Distillery team.

Maze finally settled down and midway through the half pulled a goal back when Dan Smyth finished well. The teams then shared a further 4 goals before half time with Callum Portis and Ryan Williamson scoring to keep the home team in touch.

The second half had barely started when Dan Smyth scored again for Maze to reduce the deficit to 5-4 and make a comeback appear possible. However a combination of errors by the home side and good finishing by the New Grosvenor oufit saw Maze concede a further 3 goals while managing only one, through Mark Boylan, in reply
